Personal History: Ienzo and his former self, Zexion

Personality:
Upon meeting Ienzo, one might notice a few things almost immediately: he talks a lot, but never thoughtlessly, and he's rather soft spoken. He's very intelligent and loves science and books of all kinds! He also tries his best to be thoughtful and kind. Like most of the former Kingdom Hearts villains, though, he's considerably more complicated than that. His kindness and patience, while not fake, are traits he exaggerates on purpose to get as far away from Zexion's personality as possible. He may or may not learn that Zexion's personality is part of him, and that he can show some of Zexion's sass and sharp tongue without becoming cruel like his Nobody.

At this point in canon he's quite a bit different from Zexion, both by accident and by design. He's been overwhelmed by emotion (*see "key themes") and is quite emotional about things where Zexion was, quite literally, heartless. He's also incredibly driven and determined to atone for the terrible things he did as a Nobody. He's very much a people pleaser and has that eager puppy energy. He just wants to help! He will absolutely be completely lost without some kind of project to work on.

He definitely does still carry some of the things he has in common with Zexion, though. He was and is incredibly loyal. He is absolutely ride or die with the people he loves and he will do ANYTHING for them. On the less positive side, his work ethic is intense and self-destructive. He learned this from Vexen, the absolute worst role model for that sort of thing, and tends to do the same thing- work himself to the bone fueled entirely by caffeine and stubbornness. To be fair, though, he's actually slightly less stubborn than Vexen and is more likely to agree to things like Sleep and Food if one keeps pushing. In a way, it's a version of self-harm, like he's punishing himself for everything that's happened and everything that he was. It's part of him constantly striving to be the best possible version of himself. The best version, as far as he's concerned, is working to help the Light and make the world better. Time he spends on self-care is time he could be working. This goes down to even the little things- Ienzo's hair in Kingdom Hearts 3 is clearly in desperate need of a cut and a brush, but obviously he can't be bothered.

Ienzo will drink coffee, but he actually prefers tea, and keeps a stash of teas hidden away so that Even/Vexen doesn't mess with them. He absolutely does not trust any of Vexen's concoctions, whether it's food or drink. Ienzo would prefer not to kill his taste buds, thanks. He does have a preference for acidic type flavors, though- anything pickled, for example. He also likes to eat pretty healthfully and doesn't have much of a sweet tooth, though he's still human and he'll have an ice cream or something every once in a while.

Key themes:
1. Self-blame vs. Forgiveness/acceptance: Ienzo very much blames himself for everything in his past, despite the fact that he was only a child when he was manipulated into abandoning Master Ansem and losing his heart. Every adult who was supposed to protect him absolutely failed him on the most basic level and yet he literally says "I was just a little boy, but I should have known better." At some point, he has to come to terms with the fact that he was groomed and manipulated by a trusted adult- he didn't actually have any control over the situation, and eventually he needs to forgive himself and accept that it wasn't his fault. He also, on that note, needs to accept that the adults in his life hold varying levels of responsibility for what happened and forgive them for their roles.

2. Dealing with emotions productively: When Zexion died and woke up as Ienzo, he suddenly had a heart with a full range of emotion for the first time in his adult life. He's never had to deal with adult emotions before, and it's also the first time he's had much of anything in the way of feeling for the last ten years. It's a shock to his system in many ways and he has no idea how to deal with it. While Zexion kept things very close to the vest, Ienzo is overwhelmed by feelings and hasn't learned how to regulate them yet. Eventually he'll be closer to his heartless counterpart in the showing of emotion, but in the meantime, he'll be emoting all over the place.

3. Anxiety: It's canon that Ienzo had selective mutism as a child, which at its core is an anxiety disorder. He didn't have to deal with that as Zexion, and because of that he learned how to talk- some would argue he learned too well- but now that he's Ienzo again, the anxiety is back. He still talks entirely too much, but despite what people may think, it's not because he likes the sound of his own voice. It helps him work things out, to say them out loud. He'd also rather over explain than under explain at this point. However, just like with the rest of his emotions, he's never actually dealt with the anxiety issue and it's hit him full force now. He won't necessarily go mute, but he very well could withdraw completely. It's another thing he needs to deal with over the long term.

Main Motivation:
Atonement. Like most of the former Nobodies, Ienzo would like to redeem himself as much as is possible for what he did as Zexion. He doesn't actually think this is possible, for the record, but he's planning to spend the rest of his life trying to make amends.

Skills:
Just like most of the characters in Kingdom Hearts, Ienzo has access to magic. In his case, his magic is that of illusions- making something of nothing, making someone believe something false. It's extremely powerful magic against most opponents, though it's not infallible. Some can see right through his illusions, rendering them useless and him powerless. The illusions also require a lot of power and focus, especially if they're large or complicated. It can suck up his concentration and his energy if he's not careful.

That being said, you won't see Ienzo using his magic much. He associates it not just with Zexion, but he sees it as inherently manipulative magic, and he'd rather not. He does, however, have the highest magic stats out of all of the former Nobodies, so if anyone can learn other magics, Ienzo can. He certainly has the talent for it.

However, his high magic means that he is extremely squishy in exchange. His physical fighting skills are basically zero. He could manage as Zexion because Nobodies have a major advantage in speed, strength, and other stats (compared to humans, anyway)- even then, his HP, attack, and defense skills were basically non-existent. (For real, it's hilarious.) He was never a fighter, even Zexion would only fight other characters when he absolutely had to, but now he will absolutely go very out of his way to avoid it. He knows he's weak. Especially now that he doesn't have the Nobody stat boost.

Item:
In hammerspace: Lexicon, which is his "weapon" of choice. It's a series of books that basically help him channel his magic. Like how some people use wands or a staff, for example. He can do magic without it, but it's easier with Lexicon. In there is also a laptop, a portable hard drive for said laptop, a swiss army knife because reasons, and his gummiphone.

Not in hammerspace: His clothing, which seems like it might be the unofficial Radiant Garden lab uniform- lab coat with a purple cravat at his neck, along with a button down white shirt, deep v neck sweater vest, black pants, and black boots. (Seriously, I'm not even kidding.)
